Powerful quake, tsunami kills thousands in Japan!
Japan's monumental earthquake is judged the biggest on record for that temblor-prone nation. But the impact isn't contained to one country or region. Quake shock waves powered a tsunami that traveled at the speed of a jumbo jet across the Pacific to rake the California coast and South America.
The magnitude-8.9 offshore quake unleashed a 23-foot (seven-meter) tsunami and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks for hours, many of them more than magnitude 6.0.
